Salaam Cave Tour
Swim with turtles in the clear waters of Salam Cave in Kizimkazi and experience one of Zanzibar’s more unusual southern coast attractions.
30 Minutes | Kizimkazi | Swimming and nature
What Is the Salaam Cave Tour?
Salam Cave is a natural cave attraction in the Kizimkazi area of southern Zanzibar. The experience centres around the cave pool, where visitors can swim and spend time with turtles inside the natural limestone surroundings.
The cave visit itself is relatively short, about 30 minutes. That makes Salam Cave particularly useful when you want to add a distinctive southern Zanzibar experience without giving up an entire day to one activity.
You can spend time at Salaam Cave swimming at a swimming pool or have a meal and drinks at their boat restaurant at your own arrangement.
What to Expect at Salaam Cave
- Entry into the cave area
- Time to see the natural cave surroundings
- Swimming in the cave pool
- Opportunity to see the turtles when they are present
- Time for photographs
- Return to your hotel or continuation to another activity

Important Notes
This is a short experience
Salaam Cave is not normally a full day excursion on its own. The cave visit can be relatively brief, so we often recommend to combine it with other experiences such as Mtende Beach, or Jozani Forest.
Swimming is part of the experience
If you want to enter the water, bring swimwear and a towel. You don’t have to be an expert swimmer, but you should at least be comfortable around water.
Follow the cave rules
You are adviced not to dive or jump from rocks, not to litter, and to follow guide instructions. Children should be supervised.

Salaam Cave from Different Parts of Zanzibar
Where you stay makes a real difference to how practical this excursion is.
| Where You Are Staying | Getting to Salam Cave | What to Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Kizimkazi | Very convenient | Ideal location for Salam Cave. The short distance makes it easy to arrange the cave as a standalone experience or combine it with other southern activities. |
| Jambiani | 35 to 50 minutes | A practical option from the southeast coast. Salam Cave can fit well into a half day or wider southern itinerary. |
| Paje | 40 to 55 minutes | Convenient enough to combine with other southern activities. Allow time for the road transfer when planning the day. |
| Bwejuu | 45 minutes to 1 hour | Possible as part of a southern Zanzibar plan. Consider combining the cave with another activity rather than travelling only for the short cave visit. |
| Michamvi | 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes | A reasonable cross coast transfer. The cave can work as part of a wider southern itinerary. |
| Uroa | 1 hour 5 to 1 hour 20 minutes | The transfer is longer, so consider combining Salam Cave with other activities in the south. |
| Pongwe | 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 35 minutes | Possible, but the road journey should be considered because the cave visit itself is relatively short. |
| Stone Town | 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40 minutes | A longer transfer makes this more suitable as part of a full southern day rather than a quick standalone visit. |
| Fumba | 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 30 minutes | Possible, although the practical schedule depends on your other activities and the exact cave arrangements. |
| Matemwe | 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 10 minutes | A substantial transfer is involved. Consider combining Salam Cave with other southern attractions. |
| Kendwa | 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 35 minutes | A long journey from the northwest. We would normally discuss the complete day's plan before recommending Salam Cave from Kendwa. |
| Nungwi | 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 40 minutes | A long cross island journey. Salam Cave makes more sense when combined with other southern experiences. |
Note: Travel times are planning estimates to the Kizimkazi area. Your exact hotel, road conditions, traffic and the day’s itinerary can affect the actual journey time.
