What Is the Mtende Beach Tour?

Mtende Beach is a small, scenic beach on the southern coast of Zanzibar. Unlike the larger resort beaches in the north, Mtende offers a more natural coastal setting with rock formations surrounding the beach.

The experience is mainly about the beach itself, the scenery and the changing coastline.

The tide is particularly important at Mtende. The appearance and accessibility of the beach can change considerably depending on the tide, so we do not recommend treating Mtende as a simple beach stop that can be scheduled at any time of day.

What to Expect at Mtende Beach

You would normally come to Mtende Beach for its scenic view, and swimming when the tides allow. There are also two main restaurants that you can get seafood and other meals. The walk here is beautiful. A perfect place for photo taking.

Important Notes

Mtende is strongly tide dependent

The beach can look very different at different stages of the tide. At lower tide levels, more of the beach and surrounding rock formations may be exposed. As the tide rises, the available beach area changes.

For this reason, we check the tide for your specific travel date before deciding when Mtende should fit into your day.

Do not plan the day around a fixed beach time

A good Mtende experience depends on matching the visit with the conditions rather than simply saying, for example, “we will arrive at 11:00.”

The beach is in southern Zanzibar

Mtende is not close to Nungwi or Kendwa. If you are staying in the north, the journey becomes an important part of the day’s planning.

Jambiani	Convenient	A good option for a Mtende day trip. The route south towards Makunduchi and Mtende is relatively straightforward, and the excursion can be combined with other southern attractions.
Paje	Convenient	Mtende can be visited as a half day or combined with other activities in the south. Allow enough time for the road journey and plan the beach visit around the tide.
Michamvi	Moderate	Mtende is on the opposite side of the southern part of the island, so the visit requires more road time. It can make sense as part of a wider southern Zanzibar day rather than as a short beach stop.
Stone Town	Long transfer	Mtende is in the far south of Unguja. The road journey can take around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the route and conditions, so this is better planned as a dedicated excursion or part of a full day.
Fumba	Long transfer	Mtende requires travelling across the southern part of the island. Consider combining it with other southern activities so that the transfer time is worthwhile.
Matemwe	Long transfer	Mtende is far from the northeast coast. A visit involves a substantial cross island transfer and is better suited to a full day itinerary.
Nungwi	Long transfer	Mtende is a considerable distance from the north coast. It can be visited, but expect a long day with significant road time.
Kendwa	Long transfer	Similar to Nungwi, Mtende is far from the northwest coast. We recommend considering the total driving time before choosing it as a standalone excursion.
