What Is Kayaking at Nungwi Beach?
Kayaking at Nungwi Beach is a short water activity that gives you the chance to paddle along the northern coast of Zanzibar.
Unlike a full day boat excursion, kayaking does not require a long itinerary. You can spend some time on the water and then continue enjoying Nungwi’s beach, restaurants and other activities.
The experience may be offered using a standard kayak or a transparent kayak, but the most popular one is transparent kayak.
Transparent kayaking is particularly popular with visitors who want to see the water beneath the kayak and take photographs while paddling.
This activity usually goes with drone photography at an additional cost.
What to Expect
A typical kayaking experience is straightforward.
You can expect to:
- Meet the kayaking team at the agreed beach location
- Receive the kayak and paddles
- Get a basic safety and paddling briefing
- Enter the water from Nungwi Beach
- Paddle along the coastal area
- Stop for photographs if conditions and the operator’s arrangement allow
- Return the kayak to the starting point

Important Notes
This is a short water experience
Kayaking at Nungwi is better understood as a beach activity than as a long-distance kayaking expedition.
You do not need to be an experienced kayaker
This experience is suitable for beginners, with staff providing basic instructions before getting on the water.
Swimming ability and water confidence are different things
Swimming is not required, although being comfortable around water is beneficial and life jackets may be available.
Sea conditions still matter
Wind, waves, tide and weather can affect the experience. Current tide resources specifically list kayaking among the activities whose conditions can vary with the state of the water.
Transparent kayaks are not a guarantee of marine life sightings
The clear kayak gives you a different view of the water, but visibility depends on sunlight, water clarity, sea conditions and where you paddle.
Kayaking at Nungwi from Different Parts of Zanzibar
Where you stay makes a difference to how easily you can fit the tour into your day.
| Where You Are Staying | Getting to Nungwi | What to Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Nungwi | Very convenient | Ideal for kayaking because you are already in the area. You can fit the activity easily around your beach time, meals or other plans. |
| Kendwa | Short transfer | A practical option from Kendwa. Confirm the exact pickup time and meeting point when booking. |
| Matemwe | 35 to 50 minutes | A relatively convenient option from the northeast coast. Kayaking can fit well into a half day plan. |
| Kiwengwa | 45 to 60 minutes | Reasonably accessible from the northeast coast. Allow some extra time for the road transfer when planning your day. |
| Pongwe | 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes | Possible as a half day activity, but consider the road transfer when deciding how much time you want to spend in Nungwi. |
| Stone Town | 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 minutes | A longer transfer makes this better suited to travellers who specifically want to spend time in Nungwi, rather than adding kayaking to a tight Stone Town itinerary. |
| Paje | 1 hour 45 to 2 hours 5 minutes | A substantial cross island transfer is involved. Consider whether kayaking in Nungwi fits comfortably with your other plans. |
| Jambiani | 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 10 minutes | Possible, but the total travel time is significant for a short water activity. |
| Michamvi | 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 55 minutes | Possible as part of a wider north coast plan, but consider the transfer time before booking. |
| Kizimkazi | 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 40 minutes | A long transfer is involved. We would normally discuss your full itinerary before recommending Nungwi kayaking from Kizimkazi. |
| Fumba | 2 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes | A long cross island journey. It may make more sense to combine kayaking with other Nungwi or northern Zanzibar experiences. |
